First train ride

Last Saturday we took a 90 minute train ride. Hazel was very impressed. We arrived way too early at the train station, and Hazel very patiently waited at least half an hour. She excitedly held onto her own ticket. A staff member gave her a paper junior conductor hat, which she ignored at first (and ignored the staff person as well). But then she put it on. And took it off. And put it on. It was a little bit big and kept falling down over her face.
Then we got on and sat down by the window. She was happy to look out the window almost the whole time. She said "Silly train" every time another train passed us, because they were blocking the view. Half the ride was along the water, and she pointed out all the ducks (every water fowl we saw) and the "ocean liners" (any and all boats). There are ocean liners in the book Little Toot on the Thames. She was a little nervous when we were in the dark tunnel for several minutes. She spotted several cranes in the harbor for unloading freight. Oh yes, and in the harbor she was also impressed by the giant freighters. So many things to see through the train windows. She fairly quietly took it all in.
She had me turn on the overhead lights so she could read. And then turn them off. And then turn them on. I can see that I'll probably be doing that next time we fly as well.
Upon arriving home 9 hours after the train ride, and an exciting birthday party and playtime with her cousins, the first thing she said in the house was "Where's my hat?" She was quite upset that I couldn't find it. Fortunately Gramma left us a message saying we had left it at her house, and we dropped by the train station the next day and picked up a new one.
