We woke up to April Fool's Day. I told Hazel we had accidentally only brought my Cheerios for breakfast - how horrible! She quickly caught on and had fun coming up with very silly April Fool's jokes all day. Hazel always travels with her "ditty bag" (backpack) and carefully packs it before every trip with the very essentials... Diego Rescue Tool, Raggedy Anne doll, bracelets, Astroblaster key chain, teeny tiny teddy bear, etc. Oh, and she was very excited to be able to select clothes to pack from the summer box, because it was supposed to be sunny and high 70's - wow!
Strolling the lovely grounds of the resort.
A couple ponds, a few fountains, and a pair of swans!
He didn't care at all if we came close to take photos... as long as we didn't go past him towards his nesting mate. Then he suddenly became very alert. We didn't go any further - just got a glimpse of her in her nest, in the middle of the courtyard of the next building, surrounded by motel room doors. Not very private.
This was a very happy girl. She listened attentively to the video tour as we walked the deserted plant. It was a maintenance day, but there were still hundreds of bins of thousands of colorful jelly beans just waiting to be processed further. She was dead set on getting nothing but Jelly Belly Flops as a souvenir, although we also found a pressed penny machine and added to our penny collection.
And the free hat was almost souvenir enough!
There were lots of lovely parks in Chico and many children to play with. She was part of some pretend family living on a boat while at the playground and was quite distressed when the girl playing her Mommy wanted to move on and play elsewhere.

Oddly, they have a swimming area in a random section of the river. This time of year, the current was very swift, and I hope they put out ropes during summer season, as there was a falls behind us.
Hazel had quite a bad Saturday morning here. It started with sampling a spicy green olive at farmer's market. I'll admit I didn't try it first as I don't like olives and had no idea it was spicy. About ten minutes of crying and a muffin later, she then tripped and scraped her hand on the way back to the car. Then, one stop later, a gust of wind snatched her airplane the balloon man had made her and whisked it briskly away. Cousin Cathy chased valiantly after it, but it hit something and popped. So, back to farmer's market we went and secured another balloon airplane. She managed to recover to enjoy the play area at the park above - that was one mishap and one gush of tears too many for Mommy.
Now... why do you suppose Hazel spent most of the visit, safely secure in a dining room chair with arms?
We stopped at Redding on the way home too. The visitor center wasn't open Monday, of course, but that didn't stop Hazel from pretending to be a turtle and jumping on the rocks.
Then a short walk to the Sundial Bridge. Very neat. The bridge deck was made of glass. There was a warning to check the surface temperature as it can be dangerously hot, especially for dogs and children. Yikes!
This was funny - see the deck washing machine? Like a little zamboni, taking endless passes to keep that glass surface shiny and clean.
Hazel finding a way to get high enough to use the drinking fountain.
I don't remember reading if it actually tells time or not, but there's the moving shadow.
Yes, we ate here before leaving CA, but I think the photo is more indicative of the endless reminders I give her that seem to go in one ear and out the other.
We stopped for the night in Eugene, OR at my cousins' home. I just want to give a big shout-out to Ethan, who although a mature fifteen years of age, kept Hazel fully entertained with a game of plastic bottle bowling in the kitchen. Thanks Ethan!
Meet Bonnie and Jackson - two pups who were almost one year old and just a bit playful. Hazel actually loved watching them play... as long as it wasn't with her.

Looks like fun! How nice that you could stay with family all along the way - I'm sure they enjoyed being with Hazel (and you, too, of course)!
How fun! Sounds like you had a wonderful trip. (with a few oops). LOL
